It wasn’t that Reno had gone looking for Vincent, he’d just wanted some time alone and the Forgotten City seemed like the best place for it.
Probably why he’s here, he seems to like being alone. Reno thought to himself. Before he could say anything Vincent looked up from where he was cleaning his gun, almost as though Reno’s thoughts had disturbed him.
“What are you doing here?” the other man’s facial expression stated clearly that if Reno got overly annoying the gun would put an end to that.
“I just wanted some down time, away from the office.” Reno seated himself next to Vincent and stretched languidly before lighting up.
“You mean you wanted some time away from Tseng.” the dark haired man stated blandly, returning to the task of cleaning his gun.
“Yeah, he’s got his panties in a knot cause there aren’t have enough experienced Turks,” Reno sighed heavily and scratched his head “I think his bad mood is contagious.”
“Did you talk to Cloud? He has combat experience.” Vincent deadpanned , not looking up from what he was doing.
“Spikey don’t want any part of it, he’s made that perfectly clear to Rufus. What about you? You were a Turk too, once. Ever think about joining back up?”
“I was a Turk, until I found out I was expendable, and was expended.” Vincent set his gun aside and turned to face Reno. “Haven’t you figured that out yet?”
“Look,” Reno said snuffing out his cigarette and looking Vincent in the eye “The old man tried to buy loyalty; all that got him were employees dedicated to the company they worked for, but Rufus…he earned our loyalty. Loyalty to him, not his company.”
Vincent searched the younger man’s eyes, for any sign of his somewhat twisted humor, but found none. “You mean every word of that, don’t you?” he was shocked. It wasn’t some carefully prepared speech to get him to rejoin the Turks, but an honest truth. Reno nodded, still dead serious.
“I’d take a bullet for him, not because it’s my job, but because he’s my family. We’re his family first, his Turks second and that’s how he treats us.”
They sat in silence while Reno smoked a few cigarettes before he stood and spoke “I need to get back now, but think about what I said. We could be more than teammates.”
“I’ll think about it,” Vincent said, for once sounding like he meant it “it might be nice, having a family.”
